The original Zodiac killer was never caught so insight into his childhood is difficult at best. The most likely suspect, Arthur Leigh Allen of Vallejo, CA, had a strained and difficult relationship with his mother. His father, an Air Force officer, sustained injuries at work that left him a shadow of his former self. This is a common enough scenario with violent criminals, a strong or domineering mother and quiet or meek father. But compared to other serial killers, Allen's childhood was a breeze.

FBI profilers say Zodiac most likely lived in or around the small northern California town of Vallejo, just northeast of San Francisco. He knew the area quite well, even out of the way places that most residents may have no knowledge of. It is also true that many times, serial killers' initial victims tend to be closer to their home, it's called a 'comfort' area. As they gain more confidence they may branch out to other areas.
