They are illegal because many people (wrongly) feel that every single pit bull in the world is an evil blood-hungry beast that's likes to attack people. This is biased, the only pit bulls that are mean are the ones who have been abused.

There are ordinances in Aurora, Denver, Commerce City, and Louisville outlawing the possession of any dog animal control thinks is a pit bull. Other cities and counties have local ordinances banning the breed such as Lone Tree and Castle Rock. Please check with the Animal Control Department of any county that you are thinking of relocating to, to ensure that you and your animal friend will not be harassed, exiled, or executed.
Some pit bull friendly area I know of are Longmont, Littleton, and Englewood.

no state bans pit bulls. There are cities and counties in almost every state that do ban them or require permits for them. Denver, Colorado for example bans pit bulls, but the state of Colorado does not. It all depends on the city and/or county.
