In most jurisdictions around the world it is completely legal to divorce.

The Catholic Church has led with its strong resistance to divorce. It regards the marriage vows taken in church as sacred vows before God that cannot be set aside by any human.

Nations with strong Catholic traditions tended to follow that approach, but most now follow a human rights approach that recognises that locking two unhappy people together for life is cruel.
