The men were the landowners, traders, tradesmen and workers - the full citizens amongst them directed the government. They formed the army and navy. The acted in and watched the plays and other religious observances.
Women were generally in purdah, running the household, weaving and raising the family, getting out occasionally for female religious ceremonies.
Male children were raised in their father's footsteps and given some level of education. Female children followed their mother's activities.
There was also a large slave population whose males and females did whatever was required of them, following useful or debased functions as directed by their owners, without any rights or redress whatsoever.
