In 1784 a committee chaired by Thomas Jefferson produced a report on how the Western Territory (west of the Ohio River) would be governed which included a plan on how the land would be surveyed and divided. The Western Territory of eighteen million acres was divided into 756 townships of six miles square by government surveyors. Each township contained an area of 36 square miles and was settled on the traditional New England model. A township is an administrative division of a county. You can read all about it in an excellent and fun book called Measuring America by Andro Linklater (2002).
