This only specifically mentions Bowie knives,"...or any other knife OF KIND or description.."
To me, as a logical person, this would refer to any large, non folding knife which could fit the bowie-like description. At the time of the law, A bowie knife was equated with a dueling weapon and taxed as such. You wouldn't want to give a minor a dueling weapon. Depends on where you live in California and where you buy it. Most businesses require a minimum age of 18 for purchase...sometimes it is 16. This is to limit liability to the business and lawsuits from others with the idea of protecting children. While there is no restriction of age in CARRYING a knife, municipalities, cities, counties, businesses limit purchase to those more of an age to be considered responsible for their actions.
