The auto-correct option in a word-processing program or editor tries to identify and correct errors you make as you type. While the "correction" is often accurate (for example, correcting "teh" to "the"), it can be annoying when text you intended to type gets changed to something else. In addition, auto-correction can change text to something completely different from what you intended. If you use auto-correction, you should pay attention to any changes made to make sure that the result is correct and what you meant to write.

For the iphone 4: I have researched and can't find anything that tells how to edit the auto-correct function, but if you go to settings/general/reset, there is an option to "reset keyboard dictionary"... This effectively wipes out any annoying auto-correct errors. Then again, it also deletes any custom auto-correct settings your phone has already saved.
