There has been no English Parliament since it merged with the old parliament of Scotland in 1707. since 1801 it has been the parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Brtain and Northern Irleand (Ireland until 1922). While Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have since been granted their own regional Parliaments or Assemblies there is no equivalent body for England. In term of the leader ot the United Kiongdom parliament there is a Leader of the House of Commons (the elected body) and a Leader of the House of Lords (the second chamber of appointed representatives with restricted powers). Although at one time the Leader of hte House of Commons position was usually held by the Prime Mininster, in recent years, the post has usually been combined with that of Lord President of the Council (the Privy Council), though under the current government it is combined instead with the office of Lord Privy Seal. The actual proceedings of the House are controlled by the Speaker. The leader of the UK Government is the Prime Minister who is appointed by the monarch. In practice the appointment goes to the person able to control a majority of members in the House of Commons which is the lead of the party (or coalition) with most seats. alhtough it has been used colloquaially for much longer, The title of Prmie Minister has only een official since 1905 and the offical office held by the leader was (usually) First Lord of the Treasury (a tile still held by the Prime Minister). Historically "Prime Minster" had began as a perjorative term of sarcastic abuse.
