While there are irrefutable reasons to use the services of a lawyer, you've asked instead only what the shortcomings are. Here are a few: * Lawyers are expensive. * Bringing a lawyer into a dispute will increase the tension level almost every time, and reduce changes for an amiable compromise-like solution. * Everyone thinks their specialty in life will be a solution to most problems, and lawyers are no better nor worse than anyone else in this sense. They often seek to find resolutions that result in legal action, even in cases where legal action may not be the optimum solution for you. * Lawyers like practicing law. As such, some of them enjoy suing you if there's any dispute about pay. If they do so, you'll need another lawyer to defend you, and the problem grows.

One major disadvantage is the time involved. Many cases are not like you see on TV, they're not "open and shut". Many cases call for many hours of legal research, preparing, filing papers, etc. So working hours is one.

Secondly, laws are not static, that's to say they are not the same all the time. Law's are dynamic, they're changed, amended, repealed, clarified, etc. As a lawyer you're responsible for staying on top of the Supreme Courts rulings for laws as the meaning of certain things change.

Lastly, and probably the hugest disadvantage is the feeling of losing a case. In criminal law, you're tasked with helping someone keep their freedom. If you lose your case, that person who's paying you to represent them, is going to jail. It does not build a strong relationship between you when that happens. In fact, many attorneys are fired shortly there after when it happens and no one appreciates being terminated.
