It makes a difference what kind of ivory it is, where it originated, how old it is, where and when it was imported. It is important to have documentation for your ivory if you intend to sell it or travel with it.

Under current US Federal Laws, you may own, buy, sell, or trade ivory that is over 100 years old within your state. Because state laws vary - buying, selling, trading, or even traveling with ivory intrastate might be illegal. International importing and/or exporting is complicated, requires complex documentation, is only legal for ivory over 100 years old, and might not be permitted with certain countries.

Yes it is legal to own ivory from animals in the UK providing it pre-dates a certain date.

However it has been illegal to import elephant ivory products for the last 20 Yrs. and rightly so. Although a strictly regulated harvest of elephant ivory would be of considerable benefit to the species as the profits deriveed from the hunting of the elephant and the sale of the ivory tusks (usually to the hunter) could offset the high cost of elephant conservation in those African countries that are reliant on overseas aid to feed their people.

Ivory products made from Mammoth Ivory are exempted from the ban as are products made from boar ivory etc. Old ivory items still in circulation are legal to own, purchase and offer for sale, which is a good thing or there would be a lot of illegal pianos, snooker and billiard balls etc. around.

Are peacocks legal pets in California?

In most states, peacocks are completely legal to own. In Michigan, the regulation is that you can't own an animal which is a native wild animal or resembles a native wild animal without permit. However, peacocks aren't native, and don't look native. They are, however, considered a game bird (related to the pheasant) and can generally not be owned within city limits. Go to your local DNR site and check up on local ordinances, but for the most part, peacocks are entirely legal.
