I'm not sure that the above answer is correct. The laws concerning whether parental discipline can include corporal punishment or not (i.e. smacking) vary from country to country. Also, whether a "step" parent, of sorts, is allowed to discipline a child with consent from the parent would also be different. Depending on where you live, these actions may or may not be illegal.
