something is certainly going on in the GAF-ELK world. they have suddenly made all of their laminate shingles carry a lifetime warranty, for example their timberline 30 year architectural shingle weighs about 215lbs per square and they just all of a sudden slapped a lifetime warranty on it for what seems to be no real reason except for they must be getting desperate for sales. meanwhile certainteed's similar 30 year architectural woodscape series weighs 250lbs per square, and of course in the roofing world, weight is everything. gaf is assuming homeowners won't live in their homes any longer than 15 years (and you can't really blame that thought), therefore they rarely ever have to worry about the "lifetime" shingle warranty.
because they say on their website this warranty upgrade is a permanent change... leads me to believe maybe they are trying to stir up their sales as high as possible before shutting their doors for good. some good the "lifetime" warranty will do when the company is no where to be found to honor it. if you really want a roof that will last, buy because of the weight of the shingle and use a roofing contractor that's been in business a very long time (20+ years minimal) and try your absolute best to find one that does NOT USE SUBCONTRACTORS to do their work.
