Ok: never done something like this before...I'm no expert but it seems like a trick question to me: every study I've ever seen on capitol punishment shows that it's more expensive--MUCH more expensive to go w/killing folks than keeping them if necessary out of our society for the rest of their lives...for that matter i also understand that murder is the least repeated of all crimes so even that one would surmise is unnecessary in most cases.
//The above answer is correct. Most people find it surprising to learn that it is cheaper to keep a prisoner for his natural life than to execute them. But there is a very good reason why this is so. With every death penalty case comes a number of appeals that must be exhausted before a DOE (date of exection) can be assigned to an inmate. These appeals are in place to make sure that everybody was treated justly and fairly within the judicial system. Mistakes are made in every case, some with dire consequences. All of the previous court preceedings are sent to a higher court to examine and decide if the prisoner's trial did not violate his rights, ect. Appeals cost money and jam up already jammed court calendars. Years go by and attorney's fees and court costs begin to add up. It is now under discussion about eliminating at least some of those mandatory appeals to speed up the process and save taxpayers some money. Whether this will happen is unknown at this time.//
Life in prison, WITHOUT parole.
Life in prison is not necessarily more effective than capital punishment. A murderer who is dead can never kill again. A person who is serving life in prison can still kill inmates and prison guards, although the chances of that are really small. Life in prison is more effective in the way that it costs less money to keep someone in jail than it does to have them executed. A person who is serving life in prison and later found out to be innocent can be freed and not be in prison anymore.

up to life in prison.
No. There is no capital punishment in Ireland. People convicted of murder are jailed with sentences up to life.
50 years - life in prison.
Arguments put forward in essays agreeing with capital punishment may often be such issues as the need to have a strong deterrent, that taking a life requires the loss of one's own, and that keeping someone in prison for their lifetime is a pointless exercise.
Attempted murder
You won't believe this, but the death penalty actually costs more than sentencing one to life in prison It costs about $3 million to execute one and $1.1 million to keep one in prison for life.

As punishment. It was a prison in it's former life.
It is obviously cheaper to execute a prisoner than to support someone for life in prison; but that isn't how we make decisions that involve life and death in this country.
