  • Fifty years ago people prided themselves in saying their vows in the church of their choice and also taking pride in trying to stay together no matter what the problems were. In some cases some couples definetely should have been divorced back then, but women had few rights and most couples didn't have the money for lawyers and so they either stayed together or the husband deserted the family (and on rare occasions some wives would desert their family.) An unhappy marriage that is not being maintained is not good for the environment of children. In these modern times young people are not getting married until they are in their late 20's or up to mid-30's. Some choose to live together. Churches now realize that marriage in the church is slipping greatly because some people get married by a Justice of the Peace; they may go to Another Country to get married or, they live together because they feel marriage in the church is simply a piece of paper. Also during these modern times there is far more divorce or desertion because couples don't seem to have the maturity to try to get through the rough spots of marriage and much of this is due to media hype in many areas that it is OK to cheat on your mate; come and go in the relationship as they choose without any moral standards.
