The New York State Department of State issues the Security Guard License. An applicant must complete the State Application, have fingerprints taken, and complete the required pre-Assignment training course. The completed application, fingerprints, and original copy of the Pre-Assignment course certificate are then sent to The Department of State along with the State fees that total $141.75. I run a NYS certified security school that conducts the required training. Please call (917) 841-8009 with any questions.
In order to obtain a security guard license in New York State (unarmed), you must complete the following steps:
Step 1 - Take the 8 Hour NYS Security Guard Class
Complete the mandatory NYS 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Course for Security Guards (commonly called the 8 Hour Security Guard Class) with a NYS licensed and approved security guard training school like the nonprofit AG Affiliates Security Guard Training School (www.agaffiliates.com) . . . (631) 991-2620. They only use highly experienced state-certified trainers from law enforcement, charge affordable fees with NO hidden or additional charges and surprises, and offer free ongoing job placement services for their course graduates. They are also a transparent operation and you can see exactly who is in charge and contact them anytime.
A good school will not only provide you with excellent training that goes beyond the state minimum standards, but will also provide you with the actual New York State security guard application, help you to fill it out, and then assist you with free ongoing job placement services. In addition, they should be available to contact seven days a week, and return your e-mail messages or telephone calls promptly. In other words they must be helpful, reliable and make you a priority at all times (even after the course is over).
Step 2 - Obtain Electronic Fingerprints
In addition to the 8 Hour Security Guard Class, you must also be electronically fingerprinted by the state authorized fingerprint vendor, L1 Identity Solutions (L1 Services).
Important! Some schools may still offer the old fashioned rolled print cards using ink, and they may still be sent to the state licensing authority (NYS Dept. of State Division of Licensing Service) with your application. PROBLEM:This method will only delay the processing of your security guard license application for up to a week or more, and you will still have to pay the authorize vendor fee! That is because the NYS Dept. of State no longer processes the rolled print cards, and your cards will be re-mailed by them out of state to be scanned anyhow by L1 Services. Of course if there are any mistakes on the cards your license will be delayed even more! By doing it the old way you save no money, and it will cost you extra processing time.
Step 3 - Mail in Security Guard Application Form With Any Required Items.
Mail in your state application with (a) the original Pre-Assignment Course training certificate issued by the NYS registered school (legit schools can be checked out through the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services), (b) electronic fingerprint receipt, (c) any requested additional documentation (applicable to you only if you answered "yes" to certain questions about outstanding criminal charges or convictions, mental illness, etc.), and (d) a money order for $36 to cover the state's application fee. After that you should receive your security guard license in the mail in approximately one month if there are no complications.
Want to get to work sooner? Tip: There is a way to work temporarily without a license through any state-authorized security guard employer wanting to hire you once you have completed the 8 Hour Security Guard Class and get your electronic fingerprints done. Check with your school for more information.
Note: You will need a New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issued drivers license or a NYS DMV-issued non-driver ID card to apply for your security guard license because the photo from either one of these documents is the only one that will be used for your NYS Security Guard Registration Card.
In conclusion . . .
These are the minimum steps to become an unarmed security guard.
To become an armed guard, you must complete the mandatory NYS 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Course for Security Guards (as outlined above) and the mandatory NYS 47 Hour Firearms Training Course for Security Guards. A good school will also do both types of training. After you complete both mandatory licensing courses you must complete Steps 2 and 3 above, as well.
Note: In order to take the Firearms Course you must have a New York State issued pistol permit which is usually issued by the police department, county sheriff, or county clerk, depending on where you are located.
Those are the basics. There is more training involved in order to retain and renew your license, and you may check out the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services web site for more information about training requirements. You may also check out the NYS Department of State Division of Licensing Services web site for more information about licensing. Links: Hyperlinks to these official NYS sites as well as the official site of L1 Identity Solutions (state authorized electronic fingerprint vendor) can easily be found right on the home page of www.agaffiliates.com / AG Affiliates Security Guard Training School (there is a ton of information on their site as well).
