Cardigans- If you're looking for a preppy wardrobe, stay away from

any long drapey cardigans. Something just about hip-length and fitted

is the best. Of course these cardigans look best with jeans and

pants. As for corsages and decor on the sweater, nothing too big and

popping, but a small corsage or bigger buttons are okay. For

cardigans, buy colors that will go with a lot. Things like cream,

camel, grey, and black are good. Do be careful though because if the

sweater isn't modest enough, it will look too trendy. Pullovers are

nice too, as long as you know what to get. Knit Cabled sweaters are

good. Especially the pullover sheer ones that are in many neutral

colors. Also look for pea coats in colors like navy and black. Blazers are preppy too, but sometimes look a little odd if you don't pair them with the right thing.

Pants- Skinny jeans are an essential to a preppy wardrobe. Dark

washes are best, as they can be dressed up or down for any occasion.

stay away from super light washes, and anything with distress marks

and tears. A fitted boot cut jean is suitable (American Eagle has

good ones) but nothing too baggy. Most people say Khaki's are

preppy, but they aren't. They are simply unflattering and cheap

looking. As for cordorouy's these are good. Again, be careful with

your colors. Corduroy should most often be straight leg or

skinny. Absolutely no diamonds, sparkles, or gems. These are all too

cheap looking. Pockets should be simple.

Tops- Tops are pretty easy to buy preppy if you know what to buy.

Blouses are preppy, but don't get anything to puffy, lacy, and

flowy. That tends to give the outfit a hippy look, which you should

avoid at all costs. Sailor stripes (or nautical stripes) are always looking preppy. Try to keep the stripes horizontal and not vertical to give off a preppy look.

Try some simple tee's in various colors (some neutral and some brighter colors.) Also, shirts with corsages are

really in right now. Jcrew has a bunch of these, and they're really

cute paired with a simple cardigan. But don't go too overboard.

Turtlenecks are really preppy and great for winter wear. Colors like

sand/camel, and navy are the preppiest colors you can get.

Scarves- scarves can go preppy, but you have to be careful about

your color choices. Patterns like plaid are perfect, and look best in soft pastel colors like baby blue and musty chocolate brown, and

sometimes a camel and a crimson red look good together, often with a

hint of black.

Shoes- Finding preppy shoes is the hardest part of putting together

a preppy outfit. Sperry Top-Siders are a start, and also something

every preppy wardrobe should have. Personally, I really like to wear

boots, and find myself wearing them almost four days out of a seven

day week. Tall suede boots in colors like black are a good choice.

Boots with fringe (like moccassins) are okay, but make sure its a

short boot, only about to mid calf.

During the warmest of weather, stick to neutral colored flip-flops

(like rainbows) and for dressier occasions, cute sandals will do it.

Skirts/Dresses- Skirts aren't hard to get when you're shopping for

preppy clothing. Stay with neutral colors

for dressy occasions and always go high waisted. For more casual

wear, you can consider maybe a few patterns but not too much at one

time. Sticking with more neutral colors allows you to pair your

skirts with a cute cardigan, and headband. Dresses should be very

plain if possible. Anything worn with a thin, or sometimes thick if

needed belt always looks preppy.
