The following year he was sentenced to 70 years in prison. Once convicted Lucas provided evidence that led to more than 100 further drug-related convictions. He cooperated with Richie Roberts --the detective that had previously arrested him-- and as a result his sentence was reduced from 70 years to 15. In 1984 he was convicted for new drug violations and a parole violation. He received a sentence of seven years and was released from prison in 1991. While facing up to 70 years in prison, he turned into a government informant, most notably against the then-corrupt Special Investigations Unit of the NYPD.
