There are 5 generally accepted victims, this has been debated because Marie Kelly, the last victim was killed indoors. Jack the Ripper's MO was to kill prostitutes by cutting their throat from left to right and then he would mutilate the body. The mutilation was thought by doctors to have some medical knowledge because the Ripper used his knife swiftly and carried out dissections although other doctors disagreed. Jack could have also been into death fetishism as it was said that he had removed a uterus from one victim and a kidney from another.
As the Ripper was never identified or caught any motive is pure conjecture A lot of killers don't understand why they pick the victims they do. Opportunity has something to do with it no doubt. But most go for a certain look. Ted Bundy liked brunettes with long hair. All of his victims were pretty and clean cut looking. They looked like what the they were, college students. If you look at the pictures available of the Ripper victims, not just the '5' but others that the police knew belonged to the Ripper. Most of them resemble each other. It was a look that appealed to him for whatever reasons. If you look at the pictures of Annie Chapman she resembled many of his other victims. So why he picked her was probably a combination of opportunity and she looked like what he wanted. There were many women in the same sorry state that the Rippers victims were in. Homeless, poor, alcoholic, and for the most part, living on the fringes of society. They made easy prey. And when one turned up dead it seemed no family members were outraged on their behalf. But he didn't take them. He took the ones that fit what he wanted.
It could have been anyone but most historians think that it was Mary Jane Kelly. This is just one of many misconceptions that get passed on through books and the media. Scotland Yard knew Mary Kelly was not the last victim just as the felt strongly that Mary Jane Nickols was not the first. According to Patricia Cornwell's best seller 'Jack the Ripper Case Closed' the Ripper went on killing right into the early 20th century. After Kelly the papers stopped printing much about the notorious killer. Things cooled down and it appeared that the Ripper was gone.
Trevor Marriott, a former Bedfordshire police detective has used modern police procedural techniques, to come up with a new theory about the Jack the Ripper murders (Jack the Ripper: the 21st Century Investigation). Marriott challenges the conventional wisdom that the murderer was a skilled surgeon. Moreover, Marriott says the location and timing of the killings - not far from London docks with gaps of several weeks in between - suggest the killer may have been a merchant seaman. Marriott thinks he may have identified the ship he arrived on - the Sylph, a 600-tonne cargo vessel which arrived in Britain from Barbados in July 1888, before the killing of the Ripper's first victim, Mary Ann Nichols, and which returned to the Caribbean on November 22, two weeks after the Kelly slaying, from where the same killer could have committed several similar murders in Managua in January 1889 described in a report in the Times as "six of the most atrocious murders ever committed within the limits of this city". //Although Marriott has put forth an entertaining scenario for the identity of Jack The Ripper, the dates do not match the facts. It is known now that the Ripper's first kill was most likely not Mary Ann Nichols and was probably not even Martha Tabram but may have started before Tabram's death. It is also believed that Mary Kelly was not JTR's last kill. His later victims are not well known by the average person but it is accepted as fact that the Ripper killed for years after Kelly's murder. There is no validity to theories that are based on a century of falsehoods and half-truths.//
It is very hard to get inside someone's head over 120 years after the fact. But serial killers have certain things in common. They are driven by violent fantasies. And to them the actual murder is incidental, it's the power and control over another's life and death that motivates most killers like Jack The Ripper.
Unintentionally, but yes he was. His crimes and the publicity that followed was like a beacon to expose the horrendous conditions that his victims were forced to endure on a daily basis. The wealthier citizens of London, Queen Victoria included, were publicly shamed into action. But as with most governments, and most social reform, change is slow to appear. Author Jack London for a brief time lived penniless among the impoverished east enders in 1900-01 as research for his book 'People of the Abyss'. At that time conditions were hardly improved from 1888, the time of Jack The Ripper's initial crimes. To walk the streets of Whitechapel and Spitalfields today, one would barely recognize them as the Whitechapel of the Victorian age. There are still the same streets and alleys that the Ripper stalked his prey, even a few of the buildings remain. The Ten Bells tavern is still in operation and #13 Miller's Court where Mary Jane Kelly was so brutally murdered is part of Ripper Walks for tourists. But the filth and hopelessness of the area has been eliminated, thanks in part, the Jack The Ripper.
There are lots of theories, but the identity of Jack the Ripper remains unknown. his name was Robert.masterson in Gordon kormen's book titanic his legs failed and he went to NYC to have them fixed but a young stwerd named alfe made him drown and later alfe died of hypothermia. //Jack The Ripper was not on the Titanic, he continued to kill east end prostitutes until at least 1891 and probably beyond that. Had Gordon Kormen done his research he would have known that.//
You could start with the 'basic 5', or who, what, when, where and how. -The who would be the names of the victims Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Katherine Eddows, Mary Jane Kelly. All but Kelly were homeless, and all five were alcoholic prostitutes working some of London's worst streets. -The what would be the muders and a description of the injuries. All five had their throats cut, some almost to the point of decapitation. All but Stride were disemboweled, Stride escaped this horrible fate only by chance. The Ripper was interrupted before he could cut her open. -The when would be the dates of the murders and the approximate times of death. These were determined in part by eye witnesses seeing the victims just before their demise. -The where would be a description of the Whitechapel district, London's poverty-stricken east end. A place that was so dangerous that some streets within Whitechapel the police constables would not go alone. These were dark, dirty and violent streets and alleyways that these women walked and sometimes slept, and would eventually die. -The how would be an educated guess of the weapon the Ripper used. Autopsy reports, or what was left of them, could be used to determine the width and length of the knife. How the killer most likely grabbed them from behind and cut their throats before they had time to scream. Once the throats were cut, the victims could not have made much sound at all. Then the bodies were cut open, organs taken out, and some organs missing or taken by the killer. In conclusion, the investigation, probable suspects and the notes, cards and letters sent by the Ripper to police and press. Jack The Ripper is a facinating subject and there is plenty of material available on this crimes. Footnote:The above five victims were not the only victims of the Ripper. Experts are now including many more victims with the same signature and MO.
Yes, Jack the Ripper is a name given to an unidentified serial killer (or killers) active around Whitechapel, London, England in the late 19th century. However, the killer was never found and therefore the name 'Jack the Ripper' is fictional.
You're probably referring to Sciron. Who appeared in the story of Theseus. He fed his victims to a Monstrous Turtle at the bottom of a cliff, Theseus used this same Turtle to kill Sciron.
You are talking about The Goulston Street graffito. This is the name given to some writing on a wall that was found beside a clue in the Whitechapel murders investigation. It was found at 108-119 Wentworth Model Dwellings, by PC Alfred Long on 30 Sunday 1888. This chalk-written message has been the subject of many a debate both as to its relevance if written by the Ripper and as to whether it was written by Jack the Ripper at all. Some have theorized that the message was written prior to Mrs Eddowes murder and quite possibly, Mrs Stride's murder, which of course, occurred prior to the Mitre Square tragedy on the same night. It is a matter of opinion, rather than fact, that the Ripper was illiterate or unskilled in English. There is no certainty that the Goulston Street writing was the work of Jack the Ripper.
There has been some theories about that case. One that has been studied a lot is the theory that the Servant Girl Annihilator in Austin, Texas is the same Ripper in Whitechapel, London. Those ax-murders of Austin, Texas (1884/85) are believed to be the "early work" of Jack the Ripper. The other well put was the Dr. Cream Theory. I have also read some really dumb theories in the internet. //There are many theories as to the profession of the killer known as Jack The Ripper. Some feel he must have been a doctor with knowledge of human anatomy. Others felt he had to have been a butcher, a Freemason, a Prince, a taxidermist or a midwife. Until the killer is finally identifyed, we will never know for certain.
I see this piece of 'fiction' time after time in books and information that should have been researched better. The best way to put this myth to rest is to look at the original autopsy reports (or what is left of them) in the Ripper files. There is absolutely no indication on any of the autopsy reports that would indicate that the victims were strangled or bludgened before being stabbed and disemboweled. What the evidence shows is most likely assualts from behind, throats cut from left to right first, then frontal attack with most likely the same knife that cut the throats. On one victim there was some very small bruising on the jaw, most likely the attacker put his hand over her mouth, pulled her back and cut her throat, this being accomplished in a matter of a second or two. This same pattern seems to have been repeated with all of the victims with the exception of Liz Stride. Stride being the only victim that was not mutilated most likely because the Ripper was interrupted by a street vendor. Maybe because this case was never solved and probably more has been written about Jack The Ripper than any other serial killer in history, but it has made the perfect situation for falsehoods and theories that are over time taken for fact. It's best to stick to the facts, the physical evidence, not just in this case but in all true crime cases.
