In a Criminal Trial, you have a Prosecutor and Defendant. The prosecutor's job is to prove beyond a reasonable doubt.
In a Civil Trial, you have a Plaintiff and a Defendant. The plaintiff's jog is to present the preponderance of the evidence.
Both can be jury trials. The bar is lower for the defendant in the Criminal trial. He can demand a jury trial and get it in most situations.
Beyond a reasonable doubt means almost certain. Preponderance of evidence means the evidence on the side of the plaintiff is a whole lot stronger than that on the side of the defendant. Still, what a jury will decide and award one party is frequently simply a guess. It can differ quit a bit from theory.
Civil
It's "Criminal" vs. "Civil" justice, that's why. Not criminal/victim :-)
Generically, a civil suit is one that seeks money damages or equitable remedies (such as an injunction). This is on contrast to a criminal suit. A civil suit can be person vs. person, person vs. other legal entity, or legal entity vs. legal entity. A criminal matter always involves a branch the government against another party (such as a state prosecuting someone for homicide). Therefore, a civil suit can be a breach of contract action, or one based upon injuries sustained by a person due to a defective product.

There are many ways of classifying cases, for example state vs. federal court cases. But I would say the two major types of cases are civil (lawsuits) and criminal. P.S. I am not an attorney and have no formal legal training, but that much I know.
