Technically, Religion was created to answer the fundamental questions of the human condition, such as where do we come from, and what happens to us after we die, ect.
Although philosophies and other spiritualities can cater for this need, religion is believed to be important, because it answers these questions. It also has social cohesive and transformative properties, that form communities (gives a sense of belonging) and shapes societies.
Religion is also a pathway to inner peace.Inner peace is a balance between ones physical, mental and spiritual well being. This balance is maintained with close practice of a religious system, which has adhesive social effects to maintain social health, and spiritual dimensions to maintain spiritual health. Prayer groups and meditation also help develop inner peace, as well as social cohesion. Adherents are then erged to spread this, thus created world peace.
It is more important among the Hindus as they believe that if they do not do it , their soul will not get peace.
I believe religion doesn't matter. It expresses what you believe in- whether you are: Christian, Lutheran, Agnostic, Jewish, Muslim, or whatever! Believe in what you want to believe in. ITS A FREE COUNTRY!

It is only important to those who believe in a religion. The reasons they find it important varies. As do the religions.

Depends. Religion really varies. If you're in America, most people don't believe in a "greater being" and such. You get to choose what you want to believe in. If you grew up somewhere in the Middle East, religion is life. You follow the rituals and rules.
a religion is a set of beliefs by which you live. christians and Jews also believe that you should commit to it when you are a child also. If you don't, then it is not truly a religion, because you are undecisive of it, therefore, not living by it.
The concept of religion is a set of one's personal beliefs. If you believe that religion is make believe, that is your religion. Religion does not necessarily have any ceremonies attached.
