The name was changed because hostess implies female and in our modern times jobs have to gender neutral (hence chairman is now called chairperson etc). Many people think this is silly because the the names are historic or there are perfectly good male / female equivalents. For instance there could be Air Hostesses and Air Hosts - stewards and stewardesses etc.
