Jobs for 14-Year-OldsWhen You Turn 14 . . .

You can work in an: office, grocery store, retail store, restaurant, movie theater, baseball park, amusement park, or gasoline service station.

You generally may not work in: communications or public utilities jobs, construction or repair jobs, driving a motor vehicle or helping a driver, manufacturing and mining occupations, power-driven machinery or hoisting apparatus other than typical office machines, processing occupations, public messenger jobs, transporting of persons or property, workrooms where products are manufactured, mined or processed, or warehousing and storage.

In addition, you may not work any other job or occupation declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor.

Different rules apply to farms, and individual States may have stricter rules.

Here is advice on getting a job at 14:
  • Some family restaurants will hire you for dishwasher, bus-boy/girl with parental consent.
  • He/she could shovel snow for people in the neighborhood. And in summer mow lawns, pull weeds.
  • Some places that sell ice cream/ice cream stands offer jobs for 14-year-old.
  • Supermarkets, especially bagging groceries. Many grocery stores in some areas hire at 14. For example, A&P, Publixs, Kroger.
  • Fast food restaurants. Some fast food places hire at 14, e.g. McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Subway. Fancy restaurants will not hire you as a waiter.
  • If you need a job ask your parents to mow grass, water plants, watch children, help out old or young people, paper boy, build things from stores, ask to put things in certain racks at like gas stations or any other place you might visit, you can be a sweeper at a hair place or and restaurant, fast food place.
  • You might be able to get a CPR license and get a summer job as a life guard.
  • I now work at a horse farm. I help at parties, I groom the horses, and I do other stuff. You should choose something you like. If you like animals then you could help out at a shelter.
  • I used to work at my church watching the younger children in the nursery.
  • I work at a local bowling alley, they have a room for parents to drop off their children while they bowl on leagues. The bowling alley pays me because this way they get more people to sign up for leagues. Sometimes parents will also tip.
  • Work at a "Pick-Your Own" Farm. You will get paid a decent amount. For example, in the fall you can go to apple orchards and offer to pick up the apples that have fallen on the ground. I used to do this and get paid 50 cents a basket. This may not sound like much but the basket fill up quick and it still leaves time for other part time jobs.
  • You can start your own worm beds and sell the worms for fishing.
  • Offer to help clean out peoples garage, barn, attic, basement, etc. They will pay you to clear out the clutter. If there's stuff worth saving that they want to get rid of you can then have a garage sale to earn even more money.
  • Look for stuff at garage sales that might sell good on eBay. Remember to bargain at the garage sale, the less you pay the more you will make when you resell the item.
  • Paperboy.
  • Babysitter.
  • Walk dogs or pet sitter.
  • Look around your local corner shops, farm shops, charity shops to see if they have any availabilities.
  • Camp counselor. Or look at summer camps and after school programs to work with children. Programs are always looking for extra help with the little ones at schools
  • You can, actually, get a job at 14 if you live in a state that allows it (California, for example). Most places aren't normally willing to hire 14 year old, but present yourself to them professionally and you'll definitely impress them. For the child labor laws, just do a search for "[your state] child labor law" obviously plugging in [your state] with the state you live in.
  • Do work for your neighbors, e.g. lawn, landscaping, or cleaning out garages.
  • Some public libraries hire 14-year-old to re-shelve books. The pay is usually just above minimum wage. Also, during the summer, water parks like SplishSplash (on Long Island) hire 14-year-old.
  • you can work at a local pool. I (14 year old) am going to this summer as a concession stand worker. positions fill up fast! look in your local paper or civic center for applications or phone numbers.
  • If you live in an area where corn is grown, you can get a job detasseling for a few weeks out of the year. It's good money, but you have to get up early in the morning and work in very hot weather.
  • I'm 14 and employed in the fall and spring as a soccer referee, and in the summer as a Sno Cone Maker in the parking lot of the local recreation center. There are quite a few jobs for 14-year-old here.
And some words from the teens themselves
  • When I was 12, I applied to be a soccer referee (in Sydney, Australia). I started when I was 12 and finished it at 14, and got a new job at City Beach Store until age 15, when I started a new job at Coles.
  • It depends where you live. Try using the Google search form and type in, "At what age can a minor work and receive pay?"
  • If you are too young then you could work in a grocery store as a delivery boy, stocking shelves, etc. You could do "odd jobs" for neighbors like mowing their lawns, fixing fences, painting those fences, etc. You can baby-sit for neighbors and possibly put a few notices on lamp standards, etc., to advertise baby-sitting services. You can "dog walk." There are many people that have to leave their dogs at home and would love a dependable person to come in and walk their dog for good exercise.
  • You could baby-sit children.
  • At 14, there are plenty of jobs. I am 15, and I started my first job at 14, at a McDonald's restaurant. You can also be a hostess for a restaurant, or even a busboy. All minimum wage paying jobs, but jobs none the less.
  • I think you can get a job pushing grocery carts at the local grocery store... but of course it depends on the store. I've also heard that you can get a job at Price Chopper (grocery store).
  • Depending on the state you live in, McDonald's and other fast-food restaurants may let you work part time.
  • If you want to earn money and can't get a job with a business, be creative. What can you do? Mow lawns, baby-sit, or yard work, paper route. For a regular flow of incoming cash, you could do a paper route.
  • Publix stores hires 14-year-old as baggers.
  • Chic-Fil-a also hires 14-year-old for various positions.
  • Taco bell hires 14-year-old.
  • Kroger hires 14-year-old.
  • You can work at 14 as long as you have a workers permit -- which some schools provide. Or you can call (614) 644-2239 and look at websites such as www.youthrules.dol.gov and www.com.state.oh.us for more info. The law says you CAN work at certain places with a permit.
  • One place where you can work is Blockbuster. They pay anywhere from $9 to $12 bucks per hour. You can also get a job at Kroger at age 14; they pay pretty well too.
  • You can be a paperboy, baby-sit, work at a fast-food place or a supermarket. You could also have a look in the phone book or the newspaper.
  • Try mowing lawns; you can't get a real job till you are 16.
  • 14 is pretty young for most employers. Try shoveling snow, yard work, cleaning houses for neighbors, babysitting. Otherwise, maybe you could intern or volunteer with a company and then in a year or so they will trust you so much that they will give you a real job right away instead of the low-end jobs most 16-year-old get. Try picking up garbage for a construction company, or answering phones for a non-profit organization.
  • You could always apply for a job at a movie theater.
  • Look on the billboards at one of your local shops. I did this and now I have a job as a waitress and I also babysit most Friday nights!
  • You can get a job at a Sno cone stand or any other small- time business. I'm 13 and I got work at a Sno cone stand that pays $300 a week.
  • IHOP hires at 14 here in GA, I work at IHOP. (:
  • neighborhood ice cream shoppe
  • LUNDS
  • All City in Coon Rapids by Northtown mall. You can choose your hours and work when you want.
  • Cub foods and Target generally can hire 14 year-olds, but with some restrictions on how late you can work in the evenings. You can also check Wallmart. Mc Donalds and all fast food places.
  • If you want to work in a store, it depends on the state laws. In Idaho, I know, 14 year olds can work in many place which aren't considered a hazard. This is like mining. If you have Sonic in your town, you can work as a waiter.
