The English language is the second most widely spoken language in India after Hindi. Though it appears to be a second language there is no question about its immense growth over the years in Indian history. It is the main language accepted and spoken in the field of Business and Education across all places in India. India is ranked the third largest English-speaking population in the world besides US and UK. Lots of new writers and skilled journalists are fast emerging from all over parts of the country.

English writing has blossomed in India and has reached a peak wherein Indian writers like Arundhati Roy, Vikram Seth, and Salman Rushdie were able to make a strong foothold in the international arena. They form the new generation talent writing which is taking over the world by surprise. Even we were initially surprised to see the growth of these young talent storm the world from nowhere.

Arundhati Roy won the Booker Prize for her novel "The God of Small Things." Salman Rushdie won the Booker Prize for "Midnight Children." Vikram Seth is known for his longest English novel written in a single volume.

It is good to see many new Indian authors bringing out books on Indian culture and literature. In India, it is good to see efficient writers making a mark in writing reputed sections in English newspapers. Shobha De, famous fashion and lifestyle columnist is one of the important writers to be mentioned who has paved the way for others to follow suit.

Quite a few newspapers like The Hindu, Times of India, and Indian Express has increased the popularity and acceptance greatly. They have played a major role in spreading English in all corners of the country. They are aptly supported by magazines and periodicals published each year.

One of the major contributors in elevating the writing potential is the Education system. Most of the private schools and colleges play a major role in grooming the students with spoken and written skills in English. The standard is becoming so high that we can see young students actively taking part in group discussion and quiz competition to show their talents all over the world.

Indian movies don't lag far behind in establishing English to get a strong foothold in India. Movies like "Bend it like Beckham" and "Monsoon Wedding" had taken the Indian audience to new levels.

The immense talent of Indians in the fields of reading and writing is being actively looked upon by the western countries with great interest. Some of them are also using it to their advantage by placing them in important positions in their organizations.
