* Kanada in 8 BCE discovered that weight, a property of mass causes falling. * Aristotle, in 4 BCE discovered the center of gravity, and that things fall from their center towards the center of the Earth, in proportion to their weight. * Brahmasphuta Siddhanta (628 CE) foretold that by nature what goes up must come down. * Muhammad ibn Musa (~1000 CE) hypothesized a force of attraction between heavenly bodies. * Al-Khazini, (1121) differentiated force, mass and weight as separate properties. * Galileo Galilei (~1600) realized that bodies accelerated downwards at the same rate, regardless of mass. * Sir Isaac Newton published Principia in 1687 wherein he expressed his law of universal gravitation, that the same force that plopped an apple upon his head keeps the Moon in orbit of the Earth, and the Earth and planets in orbit around the Sun. He also defined the inverse square law, where gravity between two objects affects them in direct proportion to the sum of their masses, and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers of mass. * Einsteinformulated General Relativity by which nothing, including the effect of a force such as gravity, moves faster than the speed of light, hence we are affected at any given moment by the celestial bodies where we see them, rather than where they actually are.

* Satyendra Nath Bose hypothesized particles now called gravitons, a type of boson that create the exchange of force we perceive as gravity. In string theory, gravitons are unattached closed loops, which accounts for its weakness in comparison to the other three mechanical forces; they are not fixed to this universe, hence affect neighboring manifolds as well.
