The Types of Education and the
Theories of its Origin
COMMENTS
Education is very important for society; people
need education in order to develop the full
potentials of human nature. Because of the
natural and high reasoning and learning
capability, human gains advantage over the other
organisms in the environment.
The word "Education" is derived from the Latin
word "educare" or "educere"; these words means
to lead forth.
Education is a process by which knowledge,
habits, attitudes, skills, abilities and other human
qualities are acquired. This is done through
training instructions as well as in self-activities.
There are three types of Education; namely the
Formal Education, the In-Formal Education and
the Informal Education.
The Formal Education is the education which is
hierarchically structured as well as chronologically
graded learning. This is organized and provided
by the formal school system. In here, a
certification is required to certify an individual's
progress through grades which will allow him or
her to move on a higher level.
The Non-Formal Education is the education
referring to school-based educational activities
with the aim to attain a specific learning
objective. This is usually given to special
individuals such as the illiterates, out-of-school
youths or adults.
The Informal Education is the education that can
be acquired by anyone at anytime wherever the
individual is.
There are certain theories regarding the origin of
education. These theories are the theories of the
divine creation and the theory of evolution.
The theory of the divine creation states that
education started when God equipped man with
the intellect and free will.
As the first men multiplied, their offspring
inherited their intellectual capabilities as well as
the knowledge that they had. These knowledge
developed through times which resulted in
today's human intellectual advancement.
The theory of evolution also explains another
possible origin of education. According to this
theory, education was started during the time of
the primitive man. The primitive people are used
to be savage; they used to be brutish and
animalistic. Time passed by and the primitive
man begun to find ways ensuring for his survival
as he competes with the other animals in the
environment. This made him to think how to be
feed, how to cloth, to shelter and to protect
himself. This time, education is in the simplest
form; the education is informal and learning was
limited to observation and imitation.
Accordingly, education evolves from this point to
present.
Humans posses the natural and high capability to
learn; these is an advantage that is used for the
future progress and development.
