Average would be $5/ sq yd. Although prices would very depending on Geographics, and type of carpet. This price is just to install pad and carpet. Removing old carpet would be extra, and stairs etc would be extra.
As far as the mark-up that would depend on a lot of things. The easiest would be to figure out your overhead including everything for the job that will be an expense (cost of materials, shipping, fuel etc.) and figure the profit you want, or play with some percentages until it is worth the effort on your part for the job.

My carpet is in severe need of replacing. I have a limited budget. Where should I look to find cheap carpet and help with installation?
There really is no such thing as "builder grade " carpet. The closest definition would be low cost carpet. When buying carpet the general rule is the more it costs the better the carpet. The cost for installation is a bit trickier because installation prices can vary widely from area to area and also depends on what the installer will be doing ie; wood floor or concrete, a lot of seams, hiring a helper, etc. Unlike buying carpet paying more doesn't necessarily mean a better installation. So, the answer to your question in my opinion and in my area of the country would be about $9 per square yard for carpet and installation (not including padding). But at those prices I honestly wouldn't expect much.
When you are choosing new carpet for your home, you will also need to consider the costs for the installation of your new carpet. If you install the carpet yourself, you will also need to purchase carpet matting and tack strips as well as any tool costs associated with installation. Sometimes the matting will come with the purchase of the carpet. You will need to consider any labor costs if you hire a professional to install your carpeting. You can save money by looking for deals at your local home improvement stores that offer free or low cost installation with your carpet purchase.
Many companies will wave the installation fee if you buy carpet through them. If you decide to have someone else install it, you could expect to pay about $4.00 per square yard for the carpet, and another $.50 for foam installation.
