I did leave my job without giving notice(I simply failed to return to work at my next shift-felt rather good to me that I had cut them out of my life forever) and nothing really happened to me, except that I would never ask them for a reference because I know it would not help. I was rather scared for a few days that they would bug me about what I did but they didn't--they only sent a form letter detailing that I had resigned without notice. My situation was different in that the job I had was in a field (hotels) in which I had decided to never work in again--what I have done is to not mention that I worked there and nobody has ever asked me. If I were to want to work in a hotel or related industry, things would probably be a bit different as I would have to explain myself but since I'm not, I don't worry about it.
But I worked in a place that employees were "at will" (meaning you could be fired with or without notice or leave with or without notice). Some jobs do require notice so be sure to give it if required. However, if you are in a miserable job like I was, don't intend to work in that field again, and don't need a recommendation from management, then you may want to do what I did.
Usually not without getting fired. :(

When she receives the cold letter informing her they had left the area and that they would probably never return to Netherfields.

No. The premiums of Workman's Compensation insurance are paid by the employer. The employee is not liable for that cost.
The family learned about Isabella's elopement through a letter she sent them after she had already left, informing them of her new marriage to Heathcliff.
Interesting question. I don't know if he is or not, but that might be one of the unintended consequences of printing a right-to-left comic the "wrong" way.
If the supervisor does not identify and assist the employee, the employee's performance may suffer. If the employee's troubles are left unattended, they will likely demand a greater portion of the supervisor's time and attention.

I left Safeway in 2007 top pay then was 19.33 an hour, what is it now ?
It really depends on the organization. Some companies pay the employee for accrued time, while others do not. He/she should check with the Human Resources Department.
