Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field where several scientific profiles converge in order to perform a biological process through high tech infrastructure. In fact, most of the universities around the world that have biotechnology as academic training field, offer this area as academic speciality, i.e., though graduate programs. In fact biotechnology can be divided in many areas depending upon the profile of the researcher.

So, we have engineers focused on designing new instruments, vessels or machines to perform biological processes (e.g., bioreactors, biomass separators, filters, different kind of biosensors, etc.). On the other hand, we have biologists, either microbiologists, botanists, virologists, etc., that put their biological expertice in order to understand and mimic the processes to be developed through technology. Moreover, we have health professionals, e.g., physicians with different specialities (e.g., neurologists, oncologists, cardiologists, nephrologists, pediatricians, etc.) who are focused in medical applications of biotechnology products. Many more scientific fields are involved in biotechnology: biochemists, geneticists, mathematicians, ecologists, computer developers, etc.

If we consider the basic educational requirements for biotechnology field, we have to choose one particular biotech field. Actually, biotech academia, research centers or private firms, have multidisciplinary teams to perform biotech programs.

In general terms, a biotech researcher has have basic knowledge of biology, biochemistry, engineering, mathematics, and computing sciences.
