In the US, THE emergency phone number is 911; the dispatchers there will connect you with the appropriate service (fire, police, ambulance...). In other countries it may well be a different number. For example, in the UK the official emergency number is 999, but in most locations the European Union standard emergency number of 112 is also accepted. (It doesn't really matter with modern tone-based dialing, but 112 is a much better emergency number than 999 for older switching equipment, since it involves only 4 pulses rather than 27.)
