A home interior designer is responsible for bringing design elements into various rooms of the client’s home. They often work very closely with the client to tailor the design to the client’s lifestyle and aesthetic preferences. Home interior designers deal with all aspects of the home design process, including paint colors, furniture, refinishing, light fixtures, furniture pulls and accessories. Home interior designers frequently work with multiple clients at once, so excellent organizational skills are needed.
Corporate Interior Designer
Corporate interior designers are freelancers or members of a firm who are responsible for designing the interiors of business spaces such as restaurants, stores, schools, or offices. They need to be educated in the building and safety codes required by each type of space. They also need to be able to “think big,” as these spaces are often large and require more (and a different type of) furniture, lighting, etc. than private residential spaces. Corporate interior designers frequently need to think outside the box to make business spaces distinctive.
Interior Design Shop Owner
Interior designers with an entrepreneurial streak might consider opening their own interior design shop where they sell furniture and home accessories to customers. They can also run a small interior design business out of the shop, working with private clients to improve their living or business spaces.

Design Institute of San Diego is a 4-year college that specialized in Interior Design and offers a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Interior Design accreted by CIDA. I graduated from there in 2008 and LOVED the program! What's even better is the fact that Design Institute helped me to find a job by placing me in an internship with an Architectural Firm that ended up hiring me after graduation (which was particularly fantastic due to the poor economy at the time)! DI also prepared me for the job market by helping me to create a portfolio (both physical and digital versions) and a self marketing package that I was able to give to potential employers. I still use this portfolio/marketing package today when I need to show new clients my design abilities. The bottom line is that I loved my time at Design Institute and after working in the field for several years now, I feel DI gave me the skills, knowledge and work experience I needed to become a professional, successful Interior Designer!
