Well, legal work was generally typed up on typewriters same with books and anything that needed a 'printed look'. Instead of e-mails people wrote letters by hand and bought post stamps to send them. Documents were filed away in filing cabinets. Most of these methods exist today as backups. The main disadvantage is that it was very time consuming.
