Motivation comes about from the difference between perceptions, what you perceive to be the current situation, and the situation you want. i.e. star-player Vs rank beginner. The difference causes anxiety, which is emotional energy. To "fix" the problem, training might be an answer, but will only be seriously undertaken if there is enough "Motivation". Motivation is the emotional energy moved into action. i.e. if the anxiety caused by under-performing is great enough, the person will have the motivation to train.
In simple terms, you will try harder for things you want. If you are not motivated enough to train, then the cost of winning is more than you are prepared to pay.
