I think 20 The person that said 20 is wrong. You have to be 18, have a high school diploma or GED, and a valid drivers license to be an engineer. But, you have to start as conductor first on most of the railroads. I have been with a railroad for 10 years now.

You have to have a minimum of a high school diploma. You have to sign up to attend a railroad school. Once you've graduated that, go online at the Amtrak website and 'sign up' in careers.
