In many old books in places like jeruseleum they wrote about them or even in the game Assassins Creed (X-box 360 & PS3) the team making the game had to do extensive research to make the descriptions accurate so yes they did

The Knights Templar really did exist, from 1119 to 1312. They did participate in battles, however, they were not assassins.
