Well, worms dont have lungs, so they wont drown if hit by a giant drop of water. They come out simply to mate. They lay side by side that is hard to do in a burrow.

Their holes get flooded and when they are out in the rain they can stay moist if they stay in their holes they will get crusty so when it rains they run with their legs to the outside world
