Cockroaches Are OmnivoresThis means that many species can eat and survive on almost anything organic, rotten fruit, bread, peanuts and more. "Normal" food is preferred, but roaches have been known to eat sake (alcohol), the leather off boots, paper and glue from book bindings, and basically anything with some type of edible and nutritional value.

Other cockroach anecdotes:

  • Basically, cockroaches eat anything and everything; they are very adaptable.
  • Roaches can live off a spot of cooking oil - the size of a thumbtack - for weeks.
  • Cockroaches from New Zealand eat bat feces in caves.

Well, recent studies and research is suggesting that they are developing a taste for protein based foods. They are also cannibalistic, and will eat each other, dead roaches, their own droppings, and anything that they can find. New roach bait gels have been used successfully that eradicate the roaches fairly quickly. Recent research suggests that they are now developing a preference for protein based foods such as grease and starchy foods.

Cockroaches Are CannibalsThey can and do eat each other, and their droppings, and dead roaches as well. They can get into food that is left out and contaminate it with their droppings. New roach bait gels have seemed to have a good response in controlling them as these have been tested and have the domino effect... If a roach eats the bait gel and dies, and then another roach eats the dead roach or its droppings, it will kill that roach as well.
