A computer worm is a malicious program that spreads over networks. Worms are nearly identical to viruses in every aspect except that they are "independent", meaning they don't need to infect programs in order to replicate. Computer worms cause there damage by slowing down the infected network and network resources that could instead be used for other, useful programs. Other worms contain a "payload", which is the designated function that the worm is supposed to carry out after seeing to its own reproductive needs. Most commonly, the payload is deleting important files, conducting a Denial of Service attack against targets, or other times, simply displaying a message.

A computer worm is a self-replicating computer program. It uses a network to send copies of itself to other nodes (computers on the network) and it may do so without any user intervention. Unlike a virus, it does not need to attach itself to an existing program. Worms almost always cause at least some harm to the network, if only by consumingbandwidth, whereas viruses almost always corrupt or modify files on a targeted computerhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_worm A computer worm is a malicious program that can replicate and run itself. It differs from a computer virus in that it doesn't need to embed itself into a host program to run. Computer worms usually spread through networks, although other methods of transport can be utilized such as local drives.

It is self-contained and does not require a host, unlike a normal virus.

It can replicate itself and spread all through the network, eat up the space in your hard disk and also destroy your bandwidth
