Some cockroach species protect their young for up to a few months after they are born, such as a northern Thailand species called Perisphaerus semilunatus - the nymphs cling to their mother's underside for a month or more. But for the most part, the nymphs only stay with the mother for a short while until they scatter and go their own separate ways.
Whether mother roaches care for their young also varies from one species to another. Some mothers hide or bury their ootheca (egg cases of cockroaches) and never see their offspring. Others care for their offspring after birth, and scientists believe that some offspring have the ability to recognize their mothers.
