It is a debunked myth that private universities offer better education than public colleges. In fact, a lot of major research in the academia are conducted in public universities as they have sufficient funding and resources from both the government and donors. In addition, most public colleges have experienced faculty members who are able to provide excellent education to the students.

1. University of Wisconsin-Madison

As one of the biggest research universities, the University of Wisconsin-Madison houses 29,153 undergraduate, 8,710 graduate, and 2,570 professional students. It has an average research expenditure of $800 million, ensuring graduate and professional students ample opportunities to conduct research. UW-Madison ranked 17th among world universities in the Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s 2008 Academic Ranking of World Universities. Nationally, UW-Madison was ranked 11th by the Center for Measuring University Performance in its 2007 report.

2. University of Michigan

With its highly acclaimed campus located in Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan is considered one of the public ivies in the U.S. academia. The National Research Council has ranked the university 3rd in its overall research quality in different disciplines. Indeed, the University of Michigan provides such excellent education that it has produced a great number of notable alumni, including President John F. Kennedy, seven Nobel Prize winners, 26 Rhodes Scholars, and 116 Olympic medalists.

3. University of Pittsburgh

The University of Pittsburgh is ranked among the top 20 public universities by U.S. News and Reports. It is also considered as one of the best-value public colleges by Forbes magazine. The medical school and nursing school at Pitt are nationally acclaimed, as the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has published ground-breaking research studies regularly. In addition, according to the rankings by the National Research Institute, Pitt also has excellent academic programs and research in philosophy, English literature, economics, and political science.

Although there are plenty of excellent public colleges in the United States that have world renowned academic programs, choosing a university means more than just studying the rankings. It is extremely important to visit the campuses and talk to current students as well.

How much more is the cost of a community college in state then out of state?

It depends on the specific college, it's location, and state mandates. Some community colleges charge the same tuition no matter where the student lives, some charge double the amount, while others charge three times the amount. Once you obtain the names of some community colleges you have an interest in, you can then obtain tuition and fee rates particular to that college.

5 Reasons To Get Your Nursing Degree Through Community College?

Nearly every hospital in the country is in need of more nurses. In addition to giving physical care, these professionals provide comfort, encouragement and a caring touch for the patients they serve. After deciding on a nursing career, the next step is choosing the right school. Keep reading to discover the top five advantages community colleges have to offer.Low CostThis is often the top priority for prospective students with limited funding. Although scholarships, grants and loans are available, not all students qualify for ample amounts to fund their bill. Keep in mind that nursing textbooks are more expensive than an average educational text. Community colleges offer low tuition, especially for students who have resident status within the state. Universities, private academies and for-profit institutions have much higher rates.Good ReputationCommunity colleges are non-profit schools. While they are concerned about the percentage of students who pass or fail, for-profit schools are far more concerned about this. They won't continue to exist if they can't produce attractive graduation percentages. Some prospective employers question how thorough the programs of for-profit schools are, often wondering if students are given too much slack to keep graduation rates high.Bridge ProgramUnlike many other institutions, community colleges usually offer an LPN bridge program. By choosing this option, students who want to start as an LPN may later decide to become an RN. Instead of taking an excessive amount of extra classes, the amount of credits bridge graduates take is minimal.National AccreditationMost for-profit schools are only accredited regionally. While this doesn't disqualify graduates from taking the NCLEX-RN, it does cause problems for transferring in the future. Community colleges are accredited nationally. This means that students who want to transfer to another institution offering BSN or MSN programs may do so easily. Regional credits don't always transfer.Clinical LocationCommunity colleges usually arrange for their nursing students to perform clinical rotations in a hospital. While some for-profit schools practice in hospitals, many of their students are forced to complete clinical rotations in a long-term care facility. The experiential value of hospital exposure is vital to fully grasp all aspects of nursing. Exposure in a long-term care facility is limited mostly to geriatric care. Hospitals offer educational exposure to emergency, intensive and many other types of care.Always be sure to submit applications to community colleges as early as possible. Enrollment numbers for LPN and RN programs are always high, so there is often a waiting list. To optimize chances of quick acceptance, apply to at least three community colleges.
