The Communists had taken over the governments of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria with the help of the Russian Army. They tried to take over Greece, but the Greek Army with the help of the American Army prevented it. The other countries of Europe wanted American help to keep Communism behind its present borders. America, Canada and the countries of Europe plus Brazil came up with NATO. So, NATO was created to prevent Russia from conquering the remaining countries of Europe one at a time.

Today there is tension between Russia and NATO. America does not see the problem. There is a 4,000 mile (7,000 km) unguarded border, between the United States and Canada. Russia has a different local history.

As a western World defence alliance against the then USSR with the perceived Soviet Communist threat, It was thought that the USSR wanted to rule over Europe just as Germany did and one of the reasons that they did not withdraw from eastern Europe at the end of WW2 was because during World War 2, Russia lost in the region of 26 million armed forces and civilians and thought that by ruling over the eastern European countries, if they were ever invaded again then those countries it ruled over would act as a buffer so no invading force would be able to get onto Russian soil again.

In response to N.A.T.O the USSR then formed the Warsaw Pact, which was an Alliance

of the Eastern European countries.
