If by doing its job you mean supress all noncapitalist systems of government and maintain the Western world's control over generally everything, yes. NATO was originallly set up to oppose Communist Russia and associated countries, but since the introduction of a semblance of democracy to Russia and co., it is largely unnecessary. Since then it has become a selfappointed World Police, albeit a corrupt one with selective hearing and vision.
NATO doesn't really have a job, it's a defend and military alliance. The most important point with it, is that they build up and use the members army, another point is that if a country attacks a NATO- country, it's like attacking ALL the NATO-countries.
