Many people choose to go to a medical clinic when they need to see a doctor, but is this a good idea or are they shorting themselves of the care they really need?
For most of us, visiting a medical clinic is just one step short of going to the emergency room. You don’t go to the clinic unless you need medical attention and your doctor isn’t available, but you might be surprised to find that many people go to the medical clinic instead of a primary care physician to meet all their health care needs. The question is: are they shorting themselves of essential care, or is this a reasonable option?
The Pro’s of Visiting a Medical Clinic
In some cases, visiting a clinic for your health care is a good choice. If you need immediate care for a wound or illness and cannot get into your doctor, a medical clinic is a good option. Also, if you can pay for your visit up front and don’t have insurance, you might find that it can cost you a little less for a visit of this kind.
Most medical clinics are open most of the time, so even if its two o’clock on a Sunday morning, you will still be able to see a doctor. Plus, there are many times where your primary care physician is actually a part of the clinic, so you might be able to see them.
The Con’s of Medical Clinics
Often, much in the way that the use of an emergency room for all of your health care needs is dicouraged, the use of medical clinics in this way is also discouraged because most clinics offer care to take care of immediate needs. They may do x-rays if you need them and tell you if you’re pregnant, give you stitches or treat an infection, but they always recommend that you see your regular doctor in a couple of weeks.
Most often, medical clinics aren’t for your health maintenance visits, such as yearly physicals or check-ups. They usually aren’t used for well-baby or well-child visits either, so if you choose to use a clinic as your main source of health care, you may not be doing all you can to keep yourself healthy.
In the end, the choice is yours and medical clinics have their place and are important, but if you are seeking a way to stay healthy and have a long term relationship with a doctor, you might want to skip the clinic and choose a primary care provider who meets your needs.
