Following the fire, the old House of Commons was too damaged to be used again, so the Commons moved into the former House of Lords' Chamber, which though damaged, was reroofed and refurbished by the architect Robert Smirke. The House of Lords moved to sit in the former Painted Chamber - again badly damaged, but temporarily reroofed and restored by Smirke. The two Houses sat here until the new chambers built by Barry and Pugin were completed, at which point the former medieval buildings were knocked down to make way for the expanding new Palace of Westminster.
