Nelson Rolihahla Mandela was born on July 18, 1918; he was arrested in 1962, convicted in 1964, and imprisoned for the next 27 years in a South African penal colony. He was released by F. W. de Klerk, on Janurary 11, 1990. In 1993 he and de Klerk, who was born in 1936, shared the Noble Piece Prize for their joint roles in ending aparthed in South Africa.
