Mackenzie King was very fond of dogs. He especially loved Irish Terriers and owned 3 at various points in his life. He named each one Pat. He wrote about them in his diaries:

"dear little soul, he [Pat] is almost human. I sometimes think he is a comforter dear mother has sent to me, he is filled with her spirit of patience, and tenderness and love." 1931

When Pat I died, an obituary was run for him:

"He was a more familiar figure in Ottawa than many politicians and, I fancy, knew a great deal more." ... "Laurier House will be a lonely, gloomy place without him,"
