The Treaty of Ghent. That was the Treaty of Ghent. It required the Americans and the British to return any land that they have gained during the war. Both sides agreed to make the 49th parallel of latitude the political boundary from west of the Great Lakes to the Rocky mountains.
The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812, and restored the United States and Britain to their relationship status prior to the war. As a result of the unsatisfactory communication system of the period, word the war was over did not reach some British and American soldiers, who clashed during the Battle of New Orleans.

The treaty of Ghent that was signed on the 24th of December 1814, in the province of Ghent, which is now located in Belgium, was the peace treaty that brought an end to the War of 1812, between the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. With the signing of the Treaty of Ghent the relations between the two countries was restored to a status quo "ante bellum". Due to the lack of good and speedy communication of that time, it was a relatively long time for the news of the Peace Treaty to reach the shores of America, in fact the news only reached the American shores well after the "Battle of New Orleans" had ended. According to the agreement of the Treaty of Ghent, all prisoners of wars were released and all the war land and the boats were restored. Approximately 10,000,000 acres (40,000 sq. km) was returned to America, which included the areas around Michigan, Maine, Lake Superior and towards the Pacific Coast!.
