Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. His father was Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe. Nelson's peaceful boyhood was spent cattle herding and other rural pursuits. When his father died, Nelson's rich and powerful relative took custody of him. He was sent to boarding school and later to Fort Hare Missionary College. Nelson Mandela had the courage and conviction to fight for the freedom of all races. Nelson Mandela was born in Mvezo, a small village that was located in the district of Umtata. His great grandfather was the King of the Thembu pople. Mandela is the world's most celebrated man who has held a political office while being jailed for nearly 30 years. During Nelson Mandela's jail time he had secret talks with South Africa's president. Mandela was jailed in November 1962 for a five years for leaving South Africa illegally. While in jail, he was convicted for sabotage and sentenced to a life in prison. Nelson Mandela did go to jail.
