Currently the HMS Illustrious, is now helicopter based assault carrier. The HMS Royal Ark was decomissioned spring of 2011. The Royal Navy has commissioned the Queen Elizabeth class super carriers and two are being built now, with the first expected to join service in 2016 and the second 2018.

To give you an idea of the difference in the carriers, the Illustrious is 2,000 long tons (22,000 t) with4 Olympus gas turbine engines, 2 Shafts.

The new carriers (first will be the HMS Queen Elizabeth, the second HMS Prince of Wales) will be 65,000 long tons (66,000 t) powered by 2 x Rolls-Royce MT30 Gas Turbines.

The RN has 3 Invincible Air Craft carriers that way a little bit over 20,000 tons each HMS Invincible,HMS Ark Royal,HMS Illustrious But sadly as of 2010 HMS Ark Royal and HMS Invincible are waiting to be strapped and all their 99 Harrier jump-jets have been sold to the US Marines. But HMS Illustrious has been turned in to a Helicopter carrier that carries Lynx Attack Helicopter's Merlin/Puma transport Helicopters and Chinooks and Sea King S&R Helicopters. But HMS Illustrious will be Decommissioned as of 2014.Two new Queen-Elizabeth Super Aircraft Carriers are being built as you read this and they should be Commissioned between 2016-2020 that will carrier F-35B jump jets,Lynx's, Merlin's,Pumas and Chinook's.

How many aircraft carriers does the UK have?

None, or 3, depending on who you ask. The official line is that HMS Ark Royal, (the current flagship of the fleet and the 5th ship to bear that name,) HMS Illustrious and HMS Invincible are all aircraft carriers. They do, in fact carry Harrier jump jets, but are incapable of launching many aircraft in common use on other modern carriers. However, these ships were originally designated as "through-deck cruisers" and have displacements of little over 20,000 tons. By comparison the previous Ark Royal, decommissioned in 1978, had a displacement of 43,000 tons and even this was dwarfed by the 90,000 ton carriers in use by the US Navy at the time. So, it could be argued that the Royal Navy currently has no true aircraft carriers. The person above is an idiot, they are Invincible class ships and yes they are Aircraft carriers hence the name aircraft Carriers, despite them being unable of Carrying certain aircrafts they can carry Aircraft on a basis so yes they are, there are around five aircraft carriers, they are set to be replaced by the queen Elizabeth in late 2015-2018, Queen Elizabeth class which are Super carriers with a Total weight of 72.000 metric tons Carrying up to 50 aircraft this man above knows nothing of Carriers.

What did the Washington naval conference mostly deal with?

The Treaty restricted the size, type, armament and tonnage of the Navies of the UK, US, Japan, France and Italy with the US and the UK being allowed fleets of equal size and composition at 525,000 tons and 135,000 tons of aircrart carriers. France and Italy were allowed a much smaller fleet at 175,000 tons with 60,000 tons of aircraft carriers and Japan was restricted to 315,000 tons and 81,000 tons of aircraft carriers. In fact each nation began cheating on the agreement almost from the start and the treaty was not renewed in 1936.

What is the top speed of an aircraft carrier?

Current-day nuclear-powered supercarriers of the US Navy can run at a top speed of well over 30 knots (the exact speed is classified). For various reasons (due to size, cost, propulsion choices, and other factors), other country's aircraft carriers have top speeds of 27-30 knots. In WW2, most large fleet carriers of the major combatants (US, UK, and Japan) had a top speed in the 30-33 knot range.
