The colonists defied Parliament for the taxation that was being imposed on the colonies. In an act of defiance the colonists refused to return tea that was taxed by the British government and opted instead to throw it into the Boston Harbor.

The colonists used several methods to work together. There were conventions and meetings held that allowed people to express their opinions about the laws, Parliament was suddenly imposing on them. The Port Act of 1774 closed Boston Harbor to all ships, literally cutting off their supply lines. Parliament demanded that the Boston colonists pay restitution for any property British merchants had lost due to protests and activities in Boston. The other colonies rallied with Boston when they heard what was going on, sending them supplies to tide them over. This was the first time the colonies had worked together for one common cause.
