A lot more than people consider! There had been a rift within the catholic Church since 1054! The question was, who held power within the Church. Anciently it was the Bishops on a federal basis and their authority was expressed through the medium of Church Councils.
By the millenium, it was clear that power had swung to Rome! In 1054 a break occured between the Eastern half of the Church, who held to the old ways and the Western Portion who accepted the claims of the papacy to power!
For five hundred years the arguments raged and councils were held. Popes were imprisoned, sacked and ran away. The protestant Reformation might well have saved the papacy's day. However in his dynastic problems, Henry asked the pope for an annulment, he refused, not so much as far as I can see on a religious principle, but because Katherine's nephew was the pope's jailor!
In a fit of temper Henry pointed out to the Bishop of Rome, that according to the Canons of the Church one bishop couldn't interfere in the workings of another bishops see! This cut the ground from under Rome's feet and he refused to accept Henry in Communion with his Roman Church, not the Catholic one![A totally different thing!]
In 1545, Rome called a Council at Trent where the Roman ,'Particular, Church', realigned itself with errant bishops into a new alliance that we call the Holy Roman Church.
